An Introduction to Grow Lights

Grow lights are mostly used in the commercial production of plants, to nurture plants that can be grown in a controlled indoor environment, maximising production and quality from the space available.

All plants need both periods of light (and also darkness) to grow but the amount of light required varies from plant to plant reflecting their native habitat. For instance, vegetables naturally flourish in sunny gardens and allotments but some decorative plants love shady conditions as perhaps, in their natural habitat, they would be oversahdowed by taller plants. These needs are the first to which you should give consideration. It would be of no use trying to grow plants with differing needs under the same set of lights.

It might not always be an obvious fact but even bright-sunlight loving plants need regular periods of darkness. It is an essential factor in their growth patterns. They may appear to be thriving but may refuse to flower or reach maturity.Your next decision, then, might be to decide what sort of grow lights you should be choosing. There is quite a variety of types of grow lights to choose from and all of them offer different benefits.

You will find that light is measured in degrees on a scale known as the 'Kelvin' scale. The number of degrees (of light) on this scale should not be confused with degrees signifying physical heat. The degrees Kelvin indicate the visual appearance of the light, ie., whether it appears reddish ('warm') or whether it is more blue ('cooler'). We are all familiar with the appearance of the landscape at dawn or dusk as the light changes and fixed features appear to change through warmer/cooler colours and intensity.

You will find that incandescent light sources have a relatively low colour temperature, around 2,500 degrees K and are yellowy-red in tone. Natural daylight is higher, around 6000 degrees K, cooler and more blue in tone. Incandescent lamps are more usually used to enhance the appearance of the plants, for decorative and design purposes.

Flouroscent and High Intensity lamps have differently blended phosphors that can produce an artificial light source, ranging between the warmer, lower temperatures, and the cooler, higher and bluer, daylight temperatures. Choices have still to be made, though, which will be dictated by the plants to be cultivated. Familiarise yourself with the pros and cons of each type before buying. Light sources generally fall into these broad categories:

1. Fluorescent grow lights which can be sub-divided into Standard fluorescents, High output fluorescents, and Compact fluorescents.

2. Metal Halide

3. High Pressure Sodium
